freezing layers in individual viewports

Not sure why this isn't working anymore?? or am I doing something wrong??
I go into paper space, select a viewport by left clicking on it (so it is highlighted), go to layer properties and freeze a layer in "VP freeze" (which I expect to turn off the display of that layer in the selected viewport only) but it has no effect on the layer.
Is there some deeper option that is preventing this from working, as it happens across all files and all layouts?

Ok think I ve worked it out...you have to double click the viewport (changing from layout to model) then the VP freeze commands work!
