I have the often used functions setup on my qweasdzxc keys. Is there any way to disable keystrokes so I can type without the keys starting whatever function I've associated with the particular key?

you can change hotkeys and create your own in a Customize dialog (Tools - Customize - Interface), Keyboard inset.

Yep I know that bit, Is there anyway I can turn them off then on again so I can type normal text in the middle without the hotkeys having their effect?

no, you can't do it simple, just one-by-one in Customize dialog.
