I have had the free version of NanoCAD for years.

Now when I open it is asking me for an upgrade, "Your nanoCAD License registration will expire in 28 days. Upgrade it to nanoCAD 23 now."

Is nanoCAD free? Should I upgrade the license? I only use eventually the 2D option... I'm not paying for a license.

Can anyone tell me what can I do?

Thanks.

NanoCAD Free is still available to use, the only thing - you have to request for new serial number in your personal cabinet: https://nanocad.com/personal/
New serial numbers starts with NC5NVAS and to use it you have to download recent version on nanoCAD Free from https://nanocad.com/
It's absolutely same in functionality, the only difference is - it allows to use serial with NC5NVAS.
Previous versions of nanoCAD Free aren't working with NC5NVAS.

Before new installation it's highly recommended to clean up your PC from previous installations:

1. Uninstall program via Control Panel.
2. Check and delete folder with NanoCAD files in: C:\Program Files\Nanosoft AS\
3. Check and delete folder with NanoCAD files in: C:\ProgramData\Nanosoft AS\
4. Check and delete folder with NanoCAD files in: C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Nanosoft AS\
5. Call REGEDIT in command line and check if this brunch is clean: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Nanosoft AS
* (note that ProgramData and AppData might be hidden in Windows)

Further to this, for NanoCAD free 5.0:

For old free licence numbers (NC50AS) issued during 2023 for 1 year: commercial use was allowed.

With new free licence numbers (NC5NVAS) being issued now in 2024 for 1 year: commercial use is NOT allowed.

Is there any official assistance around this change of policy like extending the validity period of the licence with the old SN (NC50AS)?
